An Exhibition of Self-Portraits

By the members of the ROYAL SOCIETY OF PORTRAIT PAINTERS in association with THE BULLDOG TRUST

In this exhibition some sixty self-portraits by members of the Society are on display. This unique show will offer an extraordinary range of contrasts. It is sponsored by The Bulldog Trust and its Chairman Richard Hoare said "This is the first exhibition of paintings ever held at Temple Place and we are delighted to be hosting The Royal Society of Portrait Painters and awarding the 'Bulldog Bursary for excellence' for the first time after a national competition."

Michael Noakes is exhibiting a work with an imaginative and humorous use of trompe l'oeil. Michael Reynolds offering makes the artist seem somewhat haunted. Anthony Williams' intense study seems to bare his soul.

The first winner of the Bulldog Bursary, sponsored by the Bulldog Trust will be presented with the £5,000 prize. He/She is also exhibiting a self-portrait.

The self-portrait is one of the most fascinating examples of the genre. It gives an insight into the character of the artist, showing how they depict themselves both for the viewer and for posterity. It is an excellent opportunity to judge their artistic skills as well as their tastes and also can reflect current trends. As the artist holds up a mirror to themselves we can also judge them and their craft. This is particularly interesting for the Royal Society of Portrait Painters members as their work is normally commissioned, thereby restricting their freedom of style.

Peoples Portraits

In 2000, the Royal Society of Portrait Painters mounted a millenial exhibition entitled People's Portraits. The idea was to represent ordinary people from all walks of life, and thereby offer a picture of the United Kingdom as it moved from the 20th century into the 21st. The resulting collection is rich in the diversity of its subjects. The artists are all members of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, and include Daphne Todd, June Mendoza and Jeff Stultiens, among others.
